Queensland is emerging as the gateway to the Asia Pacific region with the development of a dedicated health and knowledge precinct on the Gold Coast, and with several global companies in the health and knowledge sectors establishing partnerships and operations in the state.
The health and knowledge industry contributes $2.8 billion to the local economy and is the largest employing sector on the Gold Coast.
Opportunities exist for investment across: 3D printing, advance design and manufacturing; artificial intelligence, robotics and micro and nanotechnology; big data, data analytics and translatable applications; e-health, integrated healthcare and medical technology; and medical imaging, devices and wearable technologies.

Queensland is emerging as the gateway to the Asia Pacific region with several global companies in the health and knowledge sectors establishing partnerships and operations in the state including, Johnson and Johnson partnering with Queensland University of Technology on commercialising life sciences research; Emory University and the University of Queensland are collaborating on a drug initiative for the discovery of new treatments for diseases such as cancer, diabetes and infectious diseases; Queensland’s Transitional Research Institute and Siemens Healthcare have partnered to enhance the translation of relevant research into market-ready products; and the partnership between the Queensland Institute of Medical Research Berghofer and BGI, one of the world’s largest genomics organisations.
Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct
Asia-Pacific’s emerging health and innovation hub, the 200-hectare Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct (GCHKP) located on the Gold Coast, is a unique global business location for high-tech industry development, research collaboration and jobs of the future. The GCHKP is already home to the Gold Coast University Hospital and Griffith University, and boasts some of Australia’s most renowned scientists, research institutes and facilities including the Institute for Glycomics and the Menzies Health Institute. The GCHKP offers an integrated and collaborative location for learning, research, knowledge creation and commercialisation of new technologies, once complete it will be a one stop shop for world-class biomedical and health technology, research and facilities.
