Business of Sport

In the lead up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018), Queensland and the Gold Coast have developed enviable expertise in delivering major sporting events. This has created an excellent base of knowledge and skills that enables Queensland and Gold Coast businesses to contribute to the delivery of similar events both locally and overseas.

Each year Queensland and the Gold Coast host local, national and international sporting events including the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, Brisbane International Tennis, Rugby Union, Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, Quiksilver and Roxy Pro professional surfing, Magic Millions Carnival, Gold Coast 600 V8 Supercars, National Beach Volleyball Series and Gold Coast Triathlon.

Opportunities exist for representatives from major sporting events, high-performance sporting team managers, international sporting head office operations, and academics and researchers.

World-class sporting destination

The region’s warm tropical climate and world-class competition and training infrastructure offer opportunities for international athletes and sporting teams to use local facilities for preparation and acclimatisation during the northern winter.

Delivering major international events

Delivery of GC2018 and the recent investment into new and redeveloped sporting infrastructure across Queensland has improved our ability to attract and host international sporting events. Queensland, and specifically the Gold Coast, is a unique destination for hosting major events, with established world-class infrastructure including Suncorp Stadium, The Gabba, Metricon Stadium, and major convention and exhibition centres. But Queensland offers more than great local infrastructure – our businesses boast expertise in every aspect of event management, and outstanding skills in hosting, promoting and delivering major events that deliver economic outcomes, increased visitation, community pride and reputational benefits for the region.

Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is racing up the ladder of the world’s top sport cities. Sport Business International has honoured the Gold Coast as the Best Newcomer in its bi-annual Ultimate Sport Cities Rankings, while the city experienced a meteoric rise up 39 places of the Sportcal Global Sport Index, ranking it as the 18th top sporting city in the word. Recognising our strengths in sport, our city has a dedicated sport program to assist high-performance sporting teams looking to capitalise on our sporting excellence. The city offers a combination of high quality training and playing facilities, cutting edge research and expertise in sports science and an innovative sport industry.
